1988 reissue of the 1977 album by Super Biton de Sgou, Mali's leading national orchestra. It features 5 tracks of Afro sound, a modern update of traditional Bambara music incorporating Afro-Cuban and Rumba Congolese influences. Their long career, dating back to around 1960, is evident in their skilled playing and powerful, polished sound. Particularly noteworthy are "So Karafe," which could be described as Afro-Balearic with its brightly shimmering electric guitar accompaniment and vocals, and the approximately 15-minute hypnotic minimal Afro piece "Nyangaran Foli," where electric guitar and percussion intertwine seamlessly. A refined and superb musicality.
マリを代表する国営オーケストラSuper Biton de Sgouの77年作の88年リイシュー版。伝統的なバンバラ音楽をアフロ・キューバンやルンバ・コンゴレーズも取り入れモダンにアップデートしたアフロサウンド全5曲。60年頃から活動を始めたというその長い活動歴を充分に感じさせる熟練された演奏が力強く響き渡るその完成されたサウンドに驚かされます。特に鮮やかに煌めくエレキの上音と共にヴォーカルが歌うアフロ・バレアリックとでも表現できそうな”So Karafe”と約15分に及ぶエレキギターやパーカッションが絡み合うように進行していく催眠的ミニマル・アフロ”Nyangaran Foli”は白眉。洗練された素晴らしい音楽性。
