この度、美濃刀に関する曾つてない膨大な資料に基づいた研究が上梓される運びとなったことは、美濃刀を愛好する全国の士にとって誠に喜 ばしい限りである。
ご存じの如く美濃刀をテーマにした本は、他の流に比較して何故か少なかった。著者らが述べておられるように、機能美を最大限に具体的に力強く表現した日本刀は、美濃刀をおいて他には存在しない。山城物の持つ優美さ、大和物の神秘さ、備前物の華麗さ、相州物から発せられる
力強さ等とは異なった魅力を、美濃刀から感じとることができる。贅肉を殺ぎ、ただ斬ることをのみ追究した姿から発せられるエネルギーは、 視る人の魂をとらえて離さない。古来、幾多武将の愛刀として美濃刀が多いのも頷ける。
かくいう小生も、美濃刀の魅力にとりつかれた一人である。小生に美濃刀のよさを啓蒙してくれたのは、ほかでもない本書の著者の一人であ る鈴木卓夫氏である。同氏はこれから述べる赤門刀剣会の講師でもあった。以下その経緯を述べてみる。
私が本格的に刀の勉強を始めた会に、赤門刀剣会というのがあった。昭和三十五年春、上野公園の国立東京博物館内に間借りしていた財日本 美術刀剣保存協会の手狭な部屋で伽々の声をあげた会である。昭和初期、国学院大学の剣道選手であった佐藤寒山先生がその頃の好敵手だった 東大剣道部の選手と、たまたま博物館の一室で昔話に花が咲いたいう。そこで、剣道をやる以上多少は日本刀の勉強をしたらどうだ、是非そうしたい、という双方の気持ちが一致し、それでは毎月一回集まろうということになった。剣道部員に限らず弓道部員、居合道部員も入会を許さ れた。会員は明治、大正生まれの二十五名。小生が一番若輩だった。初代会長は、軍医だったが戦場で日本刀の斬れ味の研究ばかりしていた伊 藤京逸ドクターだった。その後、昭和四十三年から会場は、代々木の日本刀剣保存協会の三階にある寒山先生の部屋となった。
昭和五十三年二月に寒山先生は亡くなられた。「私が貫ちゃん(貫一は寒山先生の本名)の後を引継いであげましょう」という本間薫山先生の 申し出で、以来薫山先生が平成三年に亡くなられる迄、継続したのであった。

I am one of the people who was obsessed with the charm of the Mino sword. It was Mr. Takuo Suzuki, one of the authors of this book, who enlightened me about the goodness of the Mino sword. He was also a lecturer at the Akamon Sword Association, which I will discuss in the future. The background will be described below.
One of the groups I started studying swords in earnest was the Akamon Sword Association. In the spring of 1955, the party screamed in a small room of the Japan Art Swords Preservation Association, which had been rented in the National Tokyo Museum in Ueno Park. In the early Showa period, Professor Kanyama Sato, who was a kendo player at Kokugakuin University, happened to have a flower in an old story in a room of the museum with a player from the Kendo club of the University of Tokyo, who was a good opponent at that time. Professor Hanshan died in February 1978. At the offer of Dr. Kaoru Honma, "I will take over after Dr. Nuki-chan (Kanichi is the real name of Dr. Kanyama)", it continued until Dr. Kaoruyama died in 1991.
